I remember the bicentennial, as much as a 12 year old could. It doesn’t seem like 50 years have gone by. I plan on spending a few days in Boston this summer taking in some colonial history. Hope to see Bunker Hill, Lexington and Concorde, the USS Constitution, and maybe Paul Revere’s stomping grounds. I have a cousin that lives in Boston. For you young guys, it don’t take long for 50 years to go by, then you’re old.
Possums were 1.50 and rats 4.50 that year. I had 11 possums and two rats for a season catch.
My fur prices might have been a reflection of my beginning fur handling back then. Others got higher prices in 1976.
Back in the day of the fur boom, I saw some pelts that had been put on boards too wide for them to slide down all the way and had about 6" of extra head area on top of the boards. They had been nailed to a barn wall by the nose, and let hang down that way till dried! They all looked like ant eater hides! They still sold for pretty good money back then! … LOL!
I saw some oddly shaped fur in the mid to later 70’s
All my fur was on different shaped wooden boards at the time. Fur buyer encouraged me instead of putting me down. He didn’t probably realize he was helping invest in a lifetime endeavor.
Daddy always said there was some rough stuff being sold during that little boom in the 80s he missed the 70s boom altogether he was around just not selling eny fur pap sold a little what ever he’d kill while rabbit hunting!
Colt
I saw coons stretched on rat stretchers and foxes looked like on ironing boards. Some of the first stuff I started buying was the wire Peerless stretchers. I wanted to do better fur. My old buyer got to see me get better.
The coons were little yellow what they called Florida coons and were only big enough to go on a rat stretcher and some full of holes. Everything had some value evidently.
Back in the 70’s, There was a buyer near me who has passed away now, and He would buy anything !
He would pay a couple of bucks back then for road kill anything! If he could see hair on it, He would buy it! LOL!
It sure has gone by fast but I still have some pepsi bottles that have the Bucenntnial logo on them. My dad save a lot of pop bottles from then
I saved the quarters, remember those?
I’ve got the quarters too
