50 years trapping and had a first today, twice

I slid down a creek bank, broke off top edge, and opened up a swarming nest of yellow jackets. As I slid down the bank they covered me up and I don’t know how many stings I got. Mid December and it was 12 degrees a few days ago.
Then I proceeded to next place and snare cable was pulled into the water and buried. I had neck snared a 20 pound snapper. He was released unharmed.
Two firsts in one day.

I think you need to take up a safer hobby! The yellow jackets would have done me for the day! And I’m sure I would have lost a finger or two with the snapper!

Need to start writing, good fodder for that book

The life of a trapper! The yellow jackets would have done me in!

Rough day

The life of a trapper.

Always expect the unexpected. Thats why we love it.

Sounds like a rough day. Hopefully you will have some good days soon to make up for it.

Man, that’s kinda odd on the yellow jackets. I can’t handle many stings from those. Hope your doing okay.

Mr. Pickard, hope you are doing well with the stings, I’ve been in jackets and hornets a couple times myself and don’t care to ever again.
When I first opened your post I thought it was going to be about you snaring a bear and the breakaway didn’t work.

I’ve caught a lot of snappers especially doing summer beaver work, but I want NOTHING to do with the yellow jackets! Hope you get over the stings and have a better day tomorrow

Yellow Jackets in December is crazy. Just don’t do like Leon and try sliding into a 330

I usually get into a nest or two every summer here mowing but I’d have never expected them after this cold spell we’ve had. The creek has been frozen over right beside them. It was up in the sixties yesterday so they were warm enough to defend themselves. Now I’ll be looking out for rattlers.

I’ve caught several in late Feb. in beaver runs but never neck snared one.

I bet that was a trick getting the snare off a snapping turtle’s neck !

He was pretty docile

Good! … I figured it would be like trying to poke hot butter up a wildcats hind end! … LOL!

I released three cats this week and got a scratch to the back of the hand. He was a breeze compared to that one. I had another cat self release. It was probably a keeper.

Bummer on the Houdini cat!

It was one of those cold morning and I’d say jaws froze in slightly resulting in a slow poor catch. I’ve seen it before and will most likely see it again if I live much longer. One of the other was probably 5-6 lbs and the other two medium females.
