Really interested in going to the j3 drowning rod system. Im already using the hagz spring clips and i do have some trouble with #4 steel rebar fitting. Has anyone tried using the pink fiberglass rebar that lowes sells? Looked at it today it fitts the spring clip smoothly. I would think it would work great for a drowner rod, my only concern is if the fiberglass gonna eat my hands up.
Ive been thanking about the fiber glass bar as well have not tried it I know the smooth rod is awesome. Over half of mine are steel rebar I wish it was all fiberglass.
I may s
Try some this fall and find out. Colt
Well i can tell ya the pink stuff is splintery. Just handling it at the store and im covered in fiberlgass. May be worth getting a higher grade coated rod.
Well that answers my questions, I’m not spending the money on something that is sooner rather than later start coming apart.
And if it starts splintering that easy it won’t last

Yeah that settles that.
I touched one of those pink rods one time thinking they would be a cheap drowning rod myself. Never Again!!! Just one touch, and I had shards of fiberglass that sunk into my hand, and it was weeks before they either worked out , or healed over!
Well that settlez that. The rods j3 sells are coated. So need to find some like that. A farm supply i found sells the same type rod as a 6ft post, i think that would be great to stabilize with the spring clips. Just gotta figure out how to get the long drowners. Maybe a Michigan road trip!!!
I’d say Nick Erny could have some rods at the fall meet if you contacted him.
There tree stakes and in some states Menards carries them so they can prolly order them for ya. We got one in Richmond know.
Nick eny will have some but they are pricey
Shipping on Hagerty’s beaver rods is high. But like Steve said, Nick should have some at the fall meet. I love the Hagz beaver rod system. Light weight and fast to set up. Just wish they were 10’ long sometimes.
I never have tried it, but couldn’t a guy get some 3/8,“or 1/2,” metal conduit, and cut it about 6-8 in. long, slip a fiberglass rod in each end equally, and hammer the conduit tight to each rod , so they would not back apart to get a longer rod from the shorter ones at the Farm supply places?
I dunno, ive tried making tent ridgepoles for canvas tents for camp by pipe sleeves, just doesnt have the rigidity and strength.
Yeah ive been running drown wires and weight bags, things get tangled, the weights get heavy, it just becomes a mess. Just seems the rods are light fast amd simplifies making the set.
Ill check with nick see what he gonna take. I will be going to Michigan in February so i might be able to make a side trip and pick em up then.
I use 1/4in rebar from Lowes and it’s 5 something for a 10’ piece and cut it to lenght. I have them 6, 7, and 8ft. 1/4 isn’t near as heavy and works just fine for me.
Never had any bending of the rods with that small of a diameter? I just assumed that 3/8" would be as small as a guy would ever want to use! I can see how a slide would go down the rod quick and easy though!
