Eastern hognose doing his thing. Interesting snake for sure.
is he on his back?
Yes. They put on an aggressive show to intimidate you and if that doesn’t deter you they roll over, mouth open, tongue out, and play dead.
They swell up around their neck sometime, similar to a cobra when they are worked up! At first glance, they look pretty scary! … Maybe the hog nose snake should be the mascot for the RINO’S that that are in Government these days; Intimidating at first glance, but will roll over and play dead at the first sign of confrontation!
We always called them a spreading viper . Don’t see many these days. Did you know they have rear fangs and do produce a venom?
Colt
My understanding they have fangs in the back of their mouth to puncture toads to allow swallowing.
Well I’ve always heard they was rear fanged and had a mild venom. So I looked into it. It’s evidently a amphibian specific venom. It’s not harmful to humans unless allergic and them it could cause local swelling.
Colt
I think I saw one when I was a kid,but none in recent history
Hissing at you and if that doesn’t work plays dead sounds like a possum snake. lol
