Ryan and me are running an otter line together with mainly 220’s. Last night we go to check and we had one that no doubt made a catch, it was off the stabilizer, pulled to the end of the cable it was tied off with, fired, with nothing in it. Upon investigation, the safety latch had caught on the corner of a jaw and didn’t allow the spring to fully shut on one side. It has the flat type safety, not the typical ones I’ve seen. Is there a way to avoid this?. Would putting wire on the spring by the eye stop it from traveling up that far to hook on the jaw?.
You can slide it to the back end of the spring when leaving. Could also crimp it a little so it’s tighter or wire it to the far end when set.
I have light wire through the spring eyes of mine that I generally give a couple of wraps to the safety hooks with once the trap is set. So far it’s worked pretty good ; and I like having a big yellow hand squeeze safety on top of the jaws until I am done adjusting, or messing around anywhere near a body grip as well! Removing it is the last thing I do before walking away from the set.
Yes run it to the spring eye it’s a Bridger more than likely gotta make sure with them.
Unfortunately you won’t have to worry about that otter sticking his head in a 220 again.
Colt
Back when I beaver trapped I forgot to release my safeties a time or two.
Perry I did that this year
Good thing it didn’t connect
When I pulled the trap
It was a slap on your forehead moment
Safeties still on
330 Maniac on you tube keeps a piece of wire on his and wire s the safties back when he sets
I have a lot of respect for my 330 traps ,
I know that if you leave that bright yellow safety gripper on a beaver trap it won’t catch that night.
