I got a real good deal on a Oneida Community Newhouse No. 5 (1914-1930 +/-) here a while back. I got the deal because the thing had been opened with a block of wood wired under the pan for about 20 years. It was also very crusty with grease and grime as it had been hanging in a BBQ joint for most of the 20 years. If that wasn’t bad enough, someone thought it would be a good idea to paint it green….then gloss black……then flat black……maybe a little gray at some point. Much paint remover, soaking, pressure washing, elbow grease and finally a good WD-40 bath and I own my first Newhouse bear trap. It’s rough, but I kinda like it!
Very nice
Yeah them are some really cool traps. I love the of black smith made ones you see one of these days I’m gonna build me one.
I know where a #5 or #15 is in a barber shop but he won’t sell it. An old 4.5 Newhouse is the largest I have.
I knew where one was in a old country store when I was working. I’d say I’d say it’s still there. Nice trap Weez.
That’s a really nice trap Wes
Thank you. I enjoyed cleaning it up and seeing some of the detail come out. One of the springs is stamped but the metal is so worn and pitted that it is illegible. If I’m not mistaken, the later part of that patent era (pat date Sept 26 1911) they stopped stamping the springs so it is not the latest of that model. I think they sold to the Animal Trap Company in Lititz PN around 1925.
Hey that’s pretty cool
Cool! You have a rare item there I think. Glad you were able to restore it to show room quality!
That thing is awesome. Dumb question maybe but have you set it?
It was set when I got it…had been for many years so I assumed the springs were weak but they actually are still pretty strong. I have not set it, but had to release it…gently
