Burried bait, post hole set

So having trouble remembering where i heard about this set and howbto set it up. Basically its a post hole set, but they said to stick deer legs down in there, roadkill like skunks down in there, half or a whole beaver down in there. I think they said to throw some dirt lightly over it. But i remember that you need to stake down the bait to the bottom. Anyone familar with this set up?

Got a friend that used a post hole set a lot several years ago, and caught a lot of coyotes with it.
His version was to do just what the name implies, and he would dig a post hole just like you would drop a fence post in if you were building a fence. Only thing different was that it would only be about 8-10 inches deep , up to maybe a foot deep at most; and he would bore a small hole in the side of the hole about 2/3 of the way down running sideways to hold a smaller bait, and or lure. He used this a lot when using smaller traps like 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 coil springs, as the yote would have to step into the hole to work the bait/ lure.

If I find old core drill holes in good places I’ll throw a beaver carcass or two down in them. There’s always air moving up out of them and it creates a scent mushroom in the area. Coyotes will scratch at the edge of it all winter.

I found a place last year where the road actually broke off into a large deep rock crack. I threw several carcasses in it and they paced around the edges of it.

Ive heard of bait piles that get fenced in and hang snares on holesnon the fencing. I would think ifnyou dug a hole in the ground. Build up on the sides for blocking, and gave them a stepping spot to check it out and bedded a trap there and just dropped beaver carcass or busted up roadkill skunk down that hole it would work great. Especially if you stake down the bait so they have to fight it to get it out. Youncould preseason work that and get them used to coming in to it too

Yes I’d say you’re right.

I’ve seen and thought about making a vertical post hole set leaving the dirt loosely piled all around hole but in the trap gap. I’m interested n catching coyotes really only here near my house. They sometimes try to call my Airedale out at night and I’m afraid she’ll go thinking they’re in the trap like she usually finds them.

I stopped on my way back from Micah’s and picked up about 50 lbs. of shad. I’m planning on grinding some for a paste bait but I bet a few stinky shad down in a post hole would attract them. There’s just not enough time to try everything a man can think of during the summer.
