What size auger do you all use for your dirt hole sets? I’ve been using a 3 inch but I think it might be a little too big. If you don’t use an auger then how do you make your holes? I have one of the 3 in 1 tools but haven’t used the hole digger part.
I use a 2 inch auger seems to work
I always use a 2" also. Mainly to save on my drill battery. I also feel that the 2" hole will make the animal have to work more to get the bait.
I think mine is 2”. I don’t always use it, sometimes just my stake driver hammered in and waller’d out to make a hole.
Ive used both and had both work I like a bigger hole for cats and smaller for k9s
I never used and auger just made them smaller or bigger with my tool. I have like wise used my driver to waller out a hole.
To answer your question about the 3 in one tool just stuff it in with both hands and twist it do it as many times as it takes to get the depth you want.
Colt
I have a one inch auger I use for Mark June type double dirthole walk throughs. My ground is so hard and rocky a two inch would be hard and a three impossible in most spots. I make probably flat sets 5-1 because of the ground and do ok that way for both cats and coyotes.
I agree that a 3" hole is more eye appeal for cats, and a smaller, deeper hole seems to do just fine for canines. If you can get those holes around a foot deep or deeper, so much the better!
I use a 2”
2in for me also but sometimes thats even hard to use in stripmine land.
Sod ground it’s hard for me to use a drill
Most of the time
I use my Stake driver like said
Or a 2 inch hole puncher it works good
Gets a little tuff pulling out sometimes but
Gets the job done
I don’t like to stay at the set to long
What ever is the quickest and my stake driver
Being in my hand just seems more of what I use
This is the style set I mainly use as well. I feel as if they work the set more and you are able to guide them a better.
I have good luck with them. Paste bait in one hole, gland lure in the other. Set right on the travelway they’re deadly. I have better looking sets by blending in the trap FIRST, then drilling the two holes with the little dirt from drilling looking like a mouse hole. A tiny bit of sheep wool left showing is good. I’m putting my drill bit in the drill and going to punch in a few. I’m going to be trapping on some friends that raise cattle and want some coyotes removed. Set still catches cats if they happen along first
