I have an opportunity to trap some beaver this year for the first time. I have been walking around the area and found their lodge and 3 dams that they have built. I only have a couple 330s but plan on getting some more and I have been looking at the No BS beaver x-treme. I am planning on setting the crossovers on the dams and entrances of the lodge if I can find them and also some castor mound sets. What lures would you recommend and any other sets I should look into?
When I go to a colony like that ( mine are on big creeks not still standing ponds) usually I have.to kill them all because it’s a complaint. I start with blind sets only cross overs most of the time, channel sets and pinch points and bank den entrances I stay away from the lodge at first cause you run the risk of catching kits and getting the big beaver on alert, I run the blind sets for a few nights, then I’ll go to very natural baited sets and that usually kills the beaver. Around hear that 4 too 5 in most colonies if I feel there is another and I have to kill them all I leave for a few weeks and then go back I’ll set up the blind sets and make a few with castor and or sac oil from beaver outta that colony and usually I’ll catch um in a night or two.
Know if you want to trap that pond for years to come I’d only make a few blind sets catch 2 or 3 and leave them alone or you may not have any back for several years or ever for that matter.
Colt
Colt about said it all. Bodygrips and snares May suit you better starting out.
I wish I could only catch a few and leave some seed for the future but they are problem beaver flooding culverts where I work so they need them all gone. The only plus side to it is that I get to trap them while I am on the clock.
I’d advise being quiet when setting and stay away from houses and dens. Those little ten pounders are first ones out the chute it seems. I only set there last and sometimes they’ll stay in there longer than you’d think at the end.
countryboy3006, Those two guys gave you top notch advice! If you want to stack beaver, do what they said, the way they said, and you will! Oh, If you can get beaver lure from either one of them, you will do good with it; and if not, Dobbins backbreaker always did pretty good for me! Good luck!
It’s better to catch big ones first than the other way around if you’re trying to catch them all.
That’s about it in a nut shell all good advice
