How many can remember the winter of 1977-78

In my mind , I thought we was going to freeze to death! We used a potbelly wood stove for heat and burned coal and wood! Seemed like it snowed more everyday ! Got out of school for Christmas and went back in march! But even though it was tough we never went without anything! God provided . I did manage to catch my first red fox.times have sure changed!

I do…I was only 7 years old but I remember it because we had a really high (for a 7 year old) porch and the snow drifted up to the top. I built a snow tunnel all along the porch in front of the house. Thought that was the coolest thing ever.

Same here, no school at all after Christmas until Feb. That was my tracking winter I learned a lot.

Remember well. I had just got married in August. Got job at GE in November. Rode in a van with a guy that would take off if they called for flurries.

My sister lived close so I went to her house so I could make it to work next mornjng thinking my ride would not go in.

Then they called off work and I was stuck there for a week before I found a ride home.

I remember it all too well! Was working 2nd shift, got off at midnight, and drove home in whiteout conditions in a 65 plymouth that had no heater, the rear floor boards had rusted completely out, a rear window that had a 4" gap, with a hand carved wooden wedge to hold it up that much! It was 3 on the column, and I had to make several attempts to bust through drifts that were as deep as the hood! When I finally got home, My right hand was frost bit from rubbing the inside of the frost covered windshield so I could see to drive! I had found a left handed mitten, and that kept that hand from faring as bad as the right one had; but when I finally got home, the mitten was froze to the steering wheel! I have never been so cold in my life, and I honestly was wondering if I would make it home that night! That old plymouth had so much snow and ice packed around the engine, that it couldn’t turn over and start until March, when it finally thawed!

It was the worst one I can ever remember! But we stay out in it ! We hunting and trapped ! The river froze over and we play on it! It seem like mom made fudge at least once a week! Now people seem to have all the luxuries and aren’t satisfied! We was happy and healthy and together! That what was important to me! My wife says I was born a 100 years to late! Lol

25 below
Ohio River Froze over and people walked over back and forth from
Cincinnati to Newport and Covington
Can’t even fathom the Danger they were in the Ohio has a very swift current and deep

I was still living at home out of college
Had a job at a Bank in Cincinnati
Missed some work over the weather
My Dad hired a guy with a Dozer to clear a road to our back barn on a ridge drifts were unreal high
I still remember the walls of the drifts were over the bulldozer
Had a little path to our pond we’d chop ice so the cattle could drink

How cattle and animals made it I honestly don’t know stayed in cedar thickets and honeysuckle patches I guess

I had that barn torn down a couple yrs ago

I had just graduated and had mt first job out of high school. I shoveled a lot of snow that year.

I was 13 that winter and remember it well. What struck me the most were all the birds that gathered in dads pole barn to get out of the wind and cold. The rafters were full of them. Birds of every species that stuck around that winter were huddled side by side on the rafters trying to stay warm. We’d go in to feed the cows and they wouldn’t leave. They’d just move to another part of the barn.

I had birds do that in my barn last year in that cold.

I of course was not around for that but I’ve heard everybody talk about it my whole life.
And I’ve heard several stories about the river.and lakes that froze l,and that nobody ever saw a yote around hear before that.
