It may be largely an effort in futility

But I’m setting traps Thursday and Friday for cats. I think it’s Tom time now. Weather going to be rough but it is what it is. Going to lay in some sneaky snares too if I find some spots. Anyone else trapping this or next week on land?

Yes but depends
If it rains allot I won’t be able too. Seeing a few cat tracks in the snow one was a nice tom for sure he went up a bluff out of his way about 20 ’ to make a toilet and mark that was the only reason he did it as he turned and left in the direction he went in from.

I started this morning. Got 10 snares out in places where coyotes and looked like couple cats were moving through fences.
Tomorrow hope to get some more in and maybe try get some cubbies in for cats.
By Saturday I’ll have about a 10 mile loop on my side by side to check

Ive been canine/cat trapping for about the last week. The snow really slowed things down. And I dont think this full moon is helping either. I’ve caught a few coyotes, but only 1 bobcat. All sets I put in from now on will be focused on bobcats.

Colt, you mentioned that tom making a toilet. And I’ve heard people mention a cat toilet several times, and I know they exist. But in all my years of traversing the woods and creek banks, I dont guess I’ve ever found or seen a bobcat toilet. Is there certain places they prefer to make them?

Bare and or rocky spots in prominent areas (topography wise) I’ve found the majority of mine in intersections of roads drainage and habitat. Kinda like how a buck will scrap in high traffic areas.
Some times I believe there a post that will be revisited (as some will show up every year) and sometimes I thank the tom is worked up over another cat and does it out of frustration again like a buck running and scraping a corner down over another deer at the right time.
I don’t have allot of cats so it has forced me to scout hard over the years and I’ve found them cause I’ve covered allot of ground looking.

Be a Snare Heaven out there

I’d love to find a cat toilet

I’m like Mark June. When you find droppings you know they’ve been RIGHT THERE! Now, it could have been a while back but I always have more confidence when I find a cat toilet this time of year.

Around here I have found them around choke points where 2 hollows or drains will almost meet in a field, along old deer trails, and 4 wheeler paths, and for whatever reason where clumps of young pines are along a field edge. If you find turds that look like someone took tootsie rolls, and broke off segments about 2 inches or so and dipped them in whitewash paint, along with fresh ones in the same area, That’s the spot! …That’s a well established toilet.

Sure can learn a lot from you all

May just be me I’m so use to seeing coyote

I went to neighbor and got several buckets of dry horse poop. Setting today. Traps ought to work fine two or three nights. Then, rain on the horse poop and bitter cold afterwards. Hope we don’t get a big snow or I’ll have trouble getting in to my sets, steep. I don’t remember trapping being so weather affected. I think I was just younger and didn’t think about it.

I’m going to hang some snares tomorrow.
And get some cat sets out.

Putting some rabbits in the freezer today.

Saved the hides with the head.
Thinking these will do good in a cubby.

I don’t think a cat could stand looking at those without wanting them.

It’s slow going in these parts. Had to hack out a trap bed with the axe part of the mattock at a few spots. Ice chips and rock in the face is fun trapping. It’ll be mud tomorrow and solid frozen most of week. You can’t blend dirt, horse poop or peat n mud and frozen conditions so I’m looking for spots that’ll look halfway natural. Hung a few sneaky snares just to know I have a few chances if things freeze up. Any cat i eke out this week will be a well earned cat.
Had to do some logging clearing trails yesterday. I guess that means no one else has been in there.

I made a few otter sets, but today was largely a flop. The slop is froze just under the surface I about went in the river two or three times before I realized I wasn’t gonna be able to climb the banks right know.
Anyhow it’ll get better before seasons over I believe!

I put in a small line behind my house right before the last storm and only managed a small cat (released) and a possum. Pulled it all out yesterday and reset on another farm I haven’t trapped in 5 years or so. Trying to catch some cats and grey fox. After I let those fish for about a week I’m heading back in the water, which is my favorite place to be!!!

Been a tough slow slog for me this past few days. Caught a small cat this morning I watched run off to grow bigger.
