My Facebook footprint is getting smaller

I used our forum and Trapperman many years and the one thing about trappers, most things they see the same way. Facebook is full of trapping and almost trapping content too but there are things on there I just don’t care to see and use any of my little brain power on. If you really want to get your blood pressure up comment on a large national story. You get not only outside your circle of real friends you find out “ friends” are not what you thought and you also delve into the realm of the ones that make you understand how the country is in the mess it’s now in. I’ve always thought everyone has an opinion, which you should. It’s eye opening and sometimes disheartening to find out ( it’s easier through the keyboard) how some people think, and show you, on Facebook. Anyway, I’m backing off it. I know some of you guys use it. This site will be a better way to contact me. I still plan to stay in the UTK family loop here. The users of this site, I don’t know about the lurkers we have, are more in line with my old school fur trapper mentality and are largely actual UTK members that have a vested interest in how our organization is conveyed and portrayed to anyone that checks in. Facebook has a lot of stuff on it that will actually hurt the public’s view of trapping as it further changes and devolves in the next ten years. I’m just too old to worry about or try to change it anymore. You men on here I know and like, let’s keep actual fur trapping and our fur trapping organization alive through our meets and fur sale and when we’re gone, we won’t know about it anyway. I hope some will step up but I see dues paying trapping organizations eventually going away. There’s just too much “ free” content out there to keep people entertained and seemingly little desire to be a part of anything but a Facebook group.

Although I dont comment or post much here, i look at it regularly.

I know there are quite a few that look. I can see a graph, not the actual person, of how many visit the site. Some are what they maybe call bots, I don’t know that, but there are many that check in.

I only comment so much cause if we don’t the site goes dead so I try to come up with stuff to talk about just to keep it interesting.
I have three or 4 trapping places I check regularly but only two I try to keep lively
I don’t do Facebook period

Colt you probably feel like I do. I try to comment almost daily here to keep it going. I wonder at times if people that don’t know me, I hope none that do, think I think I’m a know it all. Every post, picture or comment I make is truly just to keep trapping alive and well in our group.

I’m with you Mr. Pickard…I had FB for a while but it just got to be too much. Disheartening and disappointing are the words that come to mind. I grew up with people that I consider friends, then see some of the stuff they post or find out what their true political views are and I am just baffled. I prefer not to know. I guess I’m kind of an old hermit…I dont need to see other peoples highlights (unless it is trapping or hunting related, I enjoy those) and I certainly dont want them to see mine. I’m kind of a “quiet and private” person like most trappers I guess.

Yeah Steve I get concerned about that too. I’m just trying to learn like everybody else. But turns out 35 years of living and breathing hunting fishing and trapping has formed allot of options in my head.
Weez I tell my wife all the time that if I had a fb that two things would happen. My blood pressure would go to crap and no body in the county would ever talk to me again.

I’m still keeping my page but very limited check ins. I had many people contact me through it last year to trap. Yes Weez, finding out people you thought you knew were something else is like a little gut punch. I don’t have many in my circle like that, a few. I just found myself scrolling it too much for useless posts. Better to get outside and cut firewood, mow grass, cut bushes, piddle in the fur shed and when it comes time, trap as hard as a man wants to. I had a Dr. Appt yesterday and everyone in there were feverishly punching on their phones. No magazines anymore in the waiting rooms. It’s just a world I’m taking a quarter turn towards turning my back on. We have so many now that have no idea what life was like before devices. There’s plenty to do out there. Heck, if you didn’t have grandkids just volunteering your time would be more beneficial than arguing on FB.

And Weez, I hope before I die you’ll drop that Mr. Stuff.

I check in every day on here as well and make a few comments but not a lot cause even though I have been doing this for 40 years I still look at you guys as mentors and for me it’s easier to read and listen and maybe learn something from you guys

I used facebook mainly for the hunting groups and the marketplace. But about 5 years ago it was nothing but bickering and nonsense so I got off of it. Then kind of was forced to get back on there a couple years later due to being elected the 8th district director of the Back Country Hunters and Anglers. It was a bigger mess then it was the first time and really drug me down looking at how some people view hunting/ trapping and wild game. I stepped down from director and got off the facebook then and haven’t looked back. I’d much rather talk to you all on here and the other couple hunting/ trapping forums I’m on than deal with those less than model sportsmen over on there. Unfortunately those are the people pushing for regulation changes and casting bad shadows on the whole group typically.

:grinning: Not happening

I knew the World; and my World had changed in 2001! The place I worked at for 24 years left and went out of the Country, 911 happened, I went to College/ trade school, and it was then and there that I first saw the effect that I-phones had on the young folks! Every one… Every single one had a phone in their hand staring at it as they walked, drove, ate, or went to the bathroom! And each year it got worse! I saw them walk into doors, trip over steps, and seen one walk right into a waist high, 15 ft. diameter circular flower bed in the middle of the courtyard between two buildings ! It was like some outside force had taken over their senses! Maybe that’s why I have never wanted anything more than a flip phone! Just walking around and paying attention, without distractions takes most of my abilities; So I sure don’t need to be hypnotized by a phone! LOL!

I’ll admit,it does break up my monotony but it pains me terribly to see the time wasted on useless dribble.AHHH

Haven’t had Facebook for 5 years. I like the hunting, trapping, fishing on there but too much nonsense! I am sure glad you guys keep this site up. I joined UTK again this year after a few year hiatus. Life happened and got busy with other things. Sure glad to be back and ready for trapping season again!

But, but, but, how are you going to post those pictures of all those nest predators that you caught if you aren’t on facebook :). Sorry Steve, couldn’t resist.

I’ll just have to learn to cope.

I must admit I get on every morning and say good morning and give a weather report from my front porch with coffee in hand and say howdy to friends that say good morning back then that’s about it. Then I head here early every morning and check in. I don’t always comment but I read all post and that’s it for the day.

I’m going to try to just check messages mainly. It’s a self prescribed change for me. It’s getting nigh on to fall and I’m going to try to do outside stuff more.
