For those of you who use fish chunks for bait does it work better to freeze your fish whole and cut them up into chunks as you use them or to cut them up before you freeze them. Do they get mushy when you chunk them and then freeze them. I have always just used smaller fish but I think this year I am going to put us some chunks and put in some fish stick sets. Colt has me sold on them as a one and done general water set.
If I keep carcasses then obviously it’s in chunks cause I’ll mostly just keep the heads but…to me froze whole is better the chucks dont so much get mushy but they freezer burn and take on more of a freezer.smell.then whole fish.
I freeze my buffalo whole and there easily cut up with a clever froze or thawed I’ve used axes ,camp knives, saws, and hatchets to cut up fish and by far a good heavy clever is the best.
Colt
I cut some fish stake stakes out today. I’ve never used them but seen Colt’s results.
Thanks Colt, my fish will be primarily carp and gar so I suspect they are close enough to buffalo in the oil/fat content that results would be similar. Yes, no one can argue with Colt’s results using it and I think it would simplify trapping a whole lot just primarily using one set. So, I plan on giving it a try this year.
I like small shad or small bluegills, freeze them covered in water to avoid freezer burn. Carp fillets put out lots of odor, salted/ground or frozen. We have the Grand River ,Pymatuning and the Shenango river watersheds. The otter I put up reek like fresh carp if you have ever bow fished for carp, the smell is very over whelming.
