Raccoon bait options

What kind of bait are you all using in your dp raccoon sets?

I use dry dog food just because we have a dog and it’s available but you can use cat food, sardines, mackerel, marshmellows or anything like that. Coons aren’t real picky when it comes to something to eat. I like a little bacon grease dribbled down the side too.

A little tip
Don’t over fill your Dp
Just a smidge up over the trigger

Another favorite of mine
Sweet bait recipe
Buy some cheap prunes
Soak in glycerin for a few days
Add some oils like persimmon oil
Or any of your choice
Don’t over do the oil you don’t want it bitter to taste
Grind it up is the easiest if you have a grinder

I use a flat head screw driver since I set them with it and put small amount in the Dp on top of my dog food and smear it on the lip
It really helps pull em in
Just my 2 cents

gonna sound crazy  but i always have had luck out of the cat temptation treats you can get at dollar general or walmart with the yellow lid like thumb catcher said , just a little over the trigger so they dont set there and investigate it too awful long

This may sound a little backwards but it works.I used to put coon lure on a cotton ball under trigger.Smear just a little peanut butter on the rim of the trap.I don’t trap coons on purpose any more. But this used to work great with DP traps.

I buy sardines in oil, dump them in a tupperware bowl and mix it into a paste with a stick. I only put it "under " the trigger, little smear on the lip of the trap and walk away. I use Z traps with a push-pull trigger and set it hair trigger going in so if the bump it going in, they are caught. Most of the time the trap still has the bait in the trap so I know they were caught first time in. I’ve tried lots of commercial baits but I seem to have better luck with the sardines. A friend of mine uses a mixure of cat food and strawberry gellatine powder and does well. If I am trapping coon in really cold temps i switch to the dry baits because the sardines will freeze down. As long as the sardines are under and not on top of the trigger freezing isn’t much of an issue but the smell is reduced somewhat if they freeze. About anything will work for a coon, if it has a smell, they will come.

Goff Farms, I have used a dry cat food base bait in my DP’s with pretty good results! I take about a 2lb. coffee can of dry cat food (fish or seafood Blend), pour it into a big skillet, mix a Tablespoon of almond oil, a T-spoon of anise oil, a little goes a long ways! a couple of big globs of peanut butter, a tablespoon of honey, and about a tablespoon of liquid smoke into the skillet, and stir it all together on low heat. once it’s all mixed together good, transfer it to a can/jar, etc. to carry while trapping. You probably could get by just fine without the skillet part, and I’m sure you could mix up ingredients and do just as well! Coons are not picky, as long as it smells good to them, and taste good to them you are golden! Oh, and sprinkle just a few bits of bait in front of the trap to give them a free sample. A little coon lure, or squeeze bottle jelly on the lip of the trap helps too I think! The main thing is to do like others have advised you, and only put the bait level with, or under the trigger instead of filling the tube up full! You want to catch them, not take them to raise!

Are you the guy who did the predator control workshop for South eastern Kentucky sheep producers association? It seems like I heard one of those guys say your username. If so, you did a great job teaching trapping! I wish I would’ve know about the double trigger. I would’ve bought those traps but luckily I only bought one to start with.

Yes sir, I am “ONE” of the guys that did the workshop… and thank you!
