Stupid question transom repair

I’m replacing the wood transom on an aluminum Jon boat. I’ve looked at YouTube but can’t find it……there’s a center brace that’s attached to the bottom of boat with rivets and the other end bolts through transom. How is the best way to get the wood in there in one piece? It won’t work in there and go in each end with the end overlaps. I’d rather not take the riveted brace out and have to rivet back in there. Could I cut the main piece of transom roughly in the middle and then come back with an overlaying large piece to strengthen it with both bolted together with the bolts? I think the center brace would allow doubled 3/4 plywood. Any of you run into this problem before? Help an old dummy out.

Yes I have mine i cut the rivets out of the old at the top then slide my new behide and bolted to replace the rivets. You can also for sure cut it like your saying and over lay the cut with another piece will be stronger in the end like that enyhow. Anytime you can laminate pieces together it’s gonna be better. I like to put liquid nails between them and screw them together. I made mine about 6" taller a few years ago and wound up with 3 layers of 3/4" made a real strong job.

I’ll take some pics when I get home.

Thanks Colt.

That what I did, just take the brace out and bolted back in place

I cut out the pieces and painted them today.
