Back when I was a young budding riverrat this was my go to set, find a floating log “with rat poop on it” tie it so you wouldn’t loose it chop a notch set a trap collect rat the next day.
Almost a guaranteed rat they use to produce for me from November till the end of season anytime I found one it produced rat enymore they don’t show up till late February and March.

Why do you think that is ? Do rats not like crawling out on a log in the open until they start rutting and maybe get bolder about being out in the open?

Well mostly it’s cause they was more rats and they marked all year know they only mark in the breeding run.
Thats my theory anyhow, I don’t have much luck on speculation the ones the rats actually mark there selves, are money in the bank.
Prolly pheromones and stuff we can’t duplicate bad for sure don’t understand.
