Trapping in harsh conditions

I thought I’d try and explain a lot of questions on waxed sand and dirt. I’ve saw post on trapper about it.

I’ve used and made both waxed sand and dirt.
I’ve settled on the sand because it’s more forgiving. I use pure sand and it can be obtained almost any where. It can also be made in the dead of winter. I use a cement mixer( harbor freight special) to heat and mix. You can heat pure sand past the boiling point of water and have no funky odors. There is a fine line when mixing dirt and the wax to the point the wax melts and doesn’t start burning organics in the dirt. Most paraffin wax melt from 125-165 degrees.
I heat the sand and add the wax after it is up to temp. I then turn the heat off and let the tub to continue to rotate til it’s below 100 degrees. I then get a clean tarp and spread the wax sand on the tarp as then as possible. It will form a sheet of sand. After it completely cool I will take the sand and sift through window screen
It’s will break and sift nicely and quickly. Do not store in a sealed container. I actually use old cattle protein tubs that have been cleaned. I just make the screams to fit over the tops and leave it for storage. I’m not very good at typing or explaining things but if you have a question ask and I’ll do my best to answer it

Thank you. I’m sure my soil was full of Harlan County organic material. I got the sand/dirt from under a Cumberland river bridge. It did smell funky while making it.
