If i understand correctly i have to submitt a form to the dept if i wish to trap any wma that has open trapping season? Do they deny those or is it just so they know who out there trapping? Or do they tell you where you can go?
It’s just to know who is out there trapping and where you are trapping. They also want to know after you are done is what you caught . They sent me a form to fill out for that.
Ok. So the rules also say i cannot set on foot paths, roads is there a minimum distance off i have to maintain or just reasonably not on them. Mr Pickard showed how he pulls cats off of deer trails at micahs, that might he the way to go.
All WMA’s are open to trapping as statewide except a very few in far west Ky and one in Lincoln county. You must get permission from area manager or wildlife biologist. One person cover several areas.
I’ve found Feb. the best time if you’re going to hit one as there’s far less people then. You’re always apt to be sharing the same spot any time during the season though.
We had one WMA a few years ago the manager was denying permission but a phone call took care of that. I think he was viewing it as his own private decision. Hunting and trapping guide states open under statewide seasons on about all of them.
I trap one WMA but am always self aware there could be other trappers or mainly, hunters using it.
The form is on KDFWR web page.
Yeah where im looking at there is alot of water, later season gonna beat out most of the deer hunters. Definitely need to watch where im setting. I know there are beagle clubs that use these areas. I think mostly water sets would be safe enough. Run drowners or completely submerged conis to hide my catches from anyone that might come by. Land sets im mostly only wanting cats, stick to thick brushy areas that anyone travelling by foot would avoid. Basically treat it like im hiding what im doing, like i got a bunch of blackfeet nosing around, lol
Yes water sets should be safer from getting anything stolen and zero dog hunter problems. I mainly water trap my one but have caught a few cats there but it’s very very remote for any walk in hunters.
Biggest problem we have is there is no atv traffic allowed off maintained roads. And areas that are foot traffic only, but that dont stop people from running the 4 wheelers and dirt bikes. Tear everything up. Alot of night riders out there.
I didn’t think ATV’s were allowed at all on WMA’s?
I’ve had problems with rabbit hunters in February
From my understanding they aint, i think they allow them and horses on any road for trucks. But no offroad. Well, there are alot of trails tore up out here.
I didn’t think they were allowed on any gravel roads even but I don’t know everything.
Ill have to check. I think they ate cracking down on it in my district. Weve got areas of wma nearby to private homes that people treat as thoer own private atv parks. These areas i try to stay away from cause all thatnypur gonna end up with is stolen traps and or shot up fur.
