Everyone has their “favorite animal” to trap and mine just happens to be coon. I’ve always been fascinated by coon since I caught my first one. My best season would have been 2014, I caught 150. My second best was 2009, I caught 100. Here is a picture of a few from the 2014 season.
My favorite in mink the otter and rats.I like coon quit a bit cause I have plenty to trap.
My best season was 250 that would have been around 2010 or 11 I’ve done 100 a few times before that.
But last season was prolly better to be honest it took a season to do 250 but last year I did 54 and 2 mink in 5 checks before my boat motor layed down.
Im planning on a good run this season Lord willing.
Cool picture there that’s a big acomplishment in its self my personal best day is 15 I think I can do a few more though.

You boys better be careful……I heard one of the commissioners wants to talk about a season limit on coons at the next meeting.
I guarantee it was Doug Morgan from the 8th district.
How many is in that loader bucket ?
Take a while to skin all those.
My best season was only about 120 but I wasn’t getting after them real hard. I like chasing the coyotes to much. My best check was in the 20’s, can’t remember the exact number. I did catch 14 one night on 16 dog proofs…. The population was crazy there… had traps spread out a good piece.
That’s impressive Colt
I’m thinking of a faster staking system to cut down on weight and things to carry
For walking in lines especially
Any one use the Berkshire stakes
Trying to make a few improvements to put
More coon on the boards this coming year
I have put about 4-5’ of 1/8” cable on my dogproofs with a loop on the end big enough to put the trap back through. Wrap the cable around a sapling or root and put the trap through the loop and stick it in the ground. No hammer, no driver, no quick links to screw around with. Simple and fast
That’s what I’m looking for
Had over a hundred coons last year and really didn’t do much special
Hit a bunch of corn feeders and set trails
Weez I’m not in your league of coyotes numbers like you but I seem to have coyotes on my brain
All the time
If it weren’t for my coons last year I’d had a sorry bag of fur cause our coyotes are of poor quality but I love catching them
That’s a good idea on that cable
I have a similar set up on my dps. Mine are about 18" long and I add from 12 to 24" of chain. But works the same big loop to put the trap through.
I use to have chain wolf fangs on my coon traps so I didn’t have to carry separate stuff to stake but…there allot slower to pull and move and a little slower to put in,so I like a 30" rebar better 3/8" are pretty light they go in quick and pull quick to move. Just add another in supper loose stuff. I don’t run drowners just 12" to 18" extra chain so they can’t pull up on the trap and let it ride. On rocky banks I have extension cables about 3’ long I quick link them to the trap and run loops around stuff or I can add a drag or weight real easy. I don’t like trough away stuff and I like to be able to deline easy so quick links help allot I got over 100 I connect all kinds of stuff with. I also have 3 to 5 foot extension chains I keep all this cables chains links in a box and.just through it from truck to boat as I change mode of transportation. I need more rebar stakes though always run a few short and always need more every season.

I’m working on a UTK response to this idea of a coon limit. At a time that one commissioner wanted to virtually remove the season on them, many are complaining about nest predation and there are more coons than ever in the history of Kentucky most likely I can only assume there are personal reasons for this to even be voiced. No state in the country has a coon limit. In fact, quite the opposite. There are not enough being taken. I assume no one here thinks we ought to have a limit on coons like we do otter and cats?
I’m all the time hearing to many coon from people with feeders and sometimes from people with them eating cat food on their porch. A limit on coons just isn’t feasible to me and waiting for the day when they remove the cat limit.
I can’t imagine a reason to have a limit on coins other than for personal reasons, if it’s the commissioner that I’m thinking of, he’s the president of a dog hunting organization in our state that I won’t name and I could see that being the reason. As far as staking, I’ve used the Wolf Fang Anchors since they’ve came out, I put 16” of cable on them and you couldn’t pull them things with a truck. I was watching a bobcat video on YouTube from a friend of mine, Greg Staggs. His channel is Staggs in the Wild, he does pretty well on coyote and bobcat over in Missouri. Anyway, on his video he took 10’ of aircraft cable, a couple double furells and looped the cable around a tree and through the furells and that’s how he “stakes” his cat traps, I’m going to try that this year too.
I haven’t seen his video but I’d suggest using a springy tree and not a big solid one they can climb partway up and pull out with a back foot catch. I’ve used cable a lot and held most but I can count a handful I’ve lost due to either entanglement wrap up or a 20 ft. Head of steam. Best thing for cats if you can are drags in my opinion. That extra second or three for the trap to firmly set before the initial pull has some merit. Both cables and drags are time and arm/back savers over driving stakes.
Thumb catcher, I don’t remember right off how many was in there. I remember getting home from checking the traps and as I got out the truck bed was loaded up with coon and I thought “ I bet I could fill the tractor bucket with all those” so I tried it out. I was 19 that year, didn’t do anything but work and live outdoors.
cant imagine a reason for limits on coons around here. every property i trap coons are the main thing they want gone.
every season the first day i show up almost every landowner makes sure to remind me to catch coons.
couple years ago i got a new property. landowner said he was overrun with coons. he knew nothing bout trapping. was showing him a dp and how it worked.
couple days later he gave me a box with 2 dozen new dps in it. said here you go. now you can catch bunch more…
A coon limit at this point in time seems like a strange request to me; and like you, I feel it must be for some type of personal reason! I see more run over these days than I ever have, so there is no shortage of them!
Taulber Thanks for sharing that picture that’s a special memory for sure
A lot of good ideas
Glad you joined the forum
On the coon limit I should know better I thought you were kidding
Absurd
I m just shaking my head
That’s a good haul
