What’s your opinion of the BYRNA pistols for self defense?

I’m starting to see these tear gas pistols advertised and have even heard it suggested they be deployed into the schools. I have mixed feelings on them.

I don’t know much about them, But I can see the benefit of having a less than lethal self defense tool. Thing is though, pepper spray works most times pretty well, but it’s not 100 % instant take down! If you ever watch self defense videos, you will notice there is often about a 3-7 second delay from being sprayed, until it starts affecting whoever gets a dose of it. I can tell you from personal experience, IT WORKS GOOD! At least on me anyway; but then again, I wasn’t doped up like some people are. On some of the really strong opioids, I have seen some people take shots of it, and act like nothing happened for quite a while. But then again, Those same type people can take multiple baton strikes, absorb shots from a handgun up to a point, and still be able to function for a few seconds, up to a few minutes. …Bottom line I guess, is that pepper spray is a tool that works good most times, but is not like a magical lightning strike that will knock someone down in a split second. Just like most handguns. The biggest factor for using it in my opinion is the fact that it’s a advertised as NON LETHAL! That will help a guy out if it’s ever used, vs using deadly force in any kind of after event Court case, and in your own mind if you have the misfortune of being in a deadly encounter! One more thing too, I think most Women would be more apt to use the pepper spray guns over a handgun for defense of themselves.

I think it also shoots a thick fiber bullet or something. I’m just wondering if it’ll catch on in a big way. Bad guy shooters won’t be packing them so I wonder if the non lethal is the answer. Several things to consider. Must just be the teargas ball, not a fiber bullet

I need to check them out I guess. Sounds interesting. I saw a case on the news years ago of a guy that was dopped up, and he was jumping up and down on cars, and destroying them. Cops were hitting him in the legs with batons to no real effect; until the one cop showed up with a pump shotgun! He told the guy one time to get down or he was going to shoot him! Guy didn’t think he would do it until about a second later; BOOM! The cop shot him with a bean bag round in the stomach, and Mr. Dope head couldn’t get off that car quick enough! LOL! He jumped on the ground, laid on his belly, and put his hands behind his back! I think Jail looked really good to him at that point!

Bean bag 12 ga and rubber 40s Anit no joke

Might work great, however, im not gonna carry 2 or 3 handguns. I’m only gonna carry one, and its not gonna be a less lethal weapon.

On the subject of Schools wanting to use them, I think again like I said, I think Women/Teachers would be more apt to use them to protect the kids; but I can tell you from doing some of the first active shooter drills/ training in the State years ago, we learned real quick that once the call goes out on the radios of active shooter, The cops come rolling in with guns out and up ready to shoot anyone holding a weapon of any kind! And they will! They “May” yell drop the weapon about 1/16th of a second before shooting!!! And they will all be shooting!!! They won’t stop to render first aid, as their job at that point is KILL THE SHOOTER/ SHOOTERS! Anyone holding a handgun would be in instant peril; even if it were a pepper spray gun! (The only thing that might give you a second or two before getting shot in that circumstance would be having the orange guns, instead of the black ones!" And it would be a Great help if the School board/ Principle/ Teachers trained ahead of time with local and State Police, and let them know that some members of the School could have Orange pepper guns!!!

That might be part of the reason they’re bright orange.

I have no experience with that particular product but we did use pepper balls for hazing bears and for dealing with large unruly crowds. The were shot out of basically a paintball gun obviously not concealable or easily carried. When the ball broke it dispersed OC powder and it was very effective, more so that the spray in most instances obviously there was also a pain stimulus to the one that actually got hit with the ball. For those who have played paintball, the balls are tougher than paintballs so as to not break in the gun or due to rough handling so they sting even worse than a paintball would.

It is important to understand when to deploy less lethal options, it is before the situation has escalated to a deadly force situation, in other words you shoot them with the pepper gun well before you are justified in shooting them with a conventional firearm. It is a step before the firearm not a substitute for the firearm.

That last paragraph mirrors my second thoughts about them. I just didn’t know how to frame it.

Life in prison is not as much of a deterrent as it once was
