Youngsters posting trapping videos

Do you guys think it may ever occur to these younger kids who are excellent in their posting videos on YouTube JUST MIGHT NOT have enough trapping experience to be showing the world how it’s done? I mean, think back how much you really knew about trapping as a 20 year old?

I’m just wondering if they’re mainly targeting other beginners or if they truly believe they’re offering everyone something? I think more than I should about the online devolvement of trapping.

Colt, I have been trapping for a long time, and there are still very few things that I feel I understand well enough try to teach to others beyond the most basic stuff for beginners, so I see exactly where you are coming from there are a lot of 2 season experts out there.

I guess some people think I’m just an old curmudgeon. I’m trying to better understand the new trap setter mindset. It’s not fur production.

First off, speaking only for myself, I don’t “KNOW” much of anything anymore! When I was around 16 to 25 years old, I knew quite a bit; but somewhere between then and now, I went to sleep one night, and all my knowledge drained into my pillow, and I never have been able to get it all back! Now I am having to learn it all back! … think I kind of know a little about some things; or I may have had an experience a time or two that gave me a general awareness of some things, but not enough to know anything for sure! I think that sort of thing is part of the issues we see with some of the You tube Trapping Instructors. They have not lived long enough for their learning to catch up with their knowing!

You got allot of good stuff up in that heads of yours, you need to let it out a little let the younger generations glen what they can from it.

One thing I’ve noticed with the kids, and even the adults, is that a lot of them that are burning up the talk forums or posting videos or pictures are fizzled out in a couple years. The forums, groups and video banks have been around several years now and it’s very common for ones to completely disappear or go on to something else they’re an expert at.

I generally don’t feel competent to teach others.if I could put those feelings of inadequacy aside I might be able to. But I will probably skulk in the shadows, lol

I realize I don’t know much if anything

Men who are 60 have to know more than teenagers don’t they? One thing we don’t know that the young ones do is how to post stuff everywhere. I had a kid down here I was trying to help a few years back. After a couple weeks tagging along he went to school and touted himself the school expert. He’s long since quit and gone on to other stuff he excels at.

We have talked about trying to counteract some of the bad stuff in this way. Iowa has started a YouTube channel, Iowa Trappers Asc… I’d like to travel around and get guys like Chet, Leon to talk about what trapping means to them. I’m starting to notice things happen, changes, before you fully realize it’s upon you unless you cut it off somehow and that requires recognizing there’s an issue. I think there’s an issue. I’m seeing older guys with bad ideas too lately. Thanks for your input.

We need one or two guys that know how to edit video as well as use the equipment.

One thing I’d like to see emphasized is about everything about trapping EXCEPT showing set methods. I think all the young ones want to skip or go straight to HOW TO MAKE SETS.There’s a lot about being a trapper besides just showing that.

On page 56 of the Trappers Post, there is a story on how there is Legislation being introduced by the House of Representatives to prohibit organized wildlife killing contest on Public Land. To me, this is a perfect example of how the lack of common sense, and wanton waste of a resource, will not be tolerated by the general public for long, and will open the door for restrictive regulations that once enacted, will only become more and more prevalent ! A perfect example of some people being their own worst enemies! And for what? 15 minutes of Face book fame! Now truth be told, I don’t care if wildlife killing contest are outlawed, but think how easily it would be to lump Trapping, Hunting, Fishing, shooting sports, etc. into a legislative bill , and boom! Everything outdoor related is made illegal! I think we would be wise to make a video at least twice a year, and post it to you tube, in order to show that the UTK does not support such contest, and to show that we are good stewards of wildlife, and support reasonable, and sound, wildlife management practices!

I agree with you 100% and things like this are exactly what I see too. Slowly by slowly these very public Facebook posts and images start becoming the public’s view and idea of ALL OF US. And the ones doing it really don’t care if it’s causing future down the road problems. They’ll just move to some other something they can be seen on Facebook with. Exactly Steve, exactly. I wish you’d have posted before I sent my last report in and I’d have plagiarized you with your permission.

Afterthought, I believe there was a very short time that the coyote contests and even the coon ones began as something else in spirit but have since morphed into a look at me more than encouraging more people to get together and really have a good time and make a better intended difference. These night scopes and Facebook have really been ramped up. I will never forget the first nights check of UTK’s first beaver brigade. We were there by much appreciated request to remove as many trouble causing beaver as we could in that area. We had a first check of 58 beaver laying there but it wasn’t shown by Ky Afield due to perceived public, mainly Lexington and Louisville I’d suppose, outcry we were taking too many.

Yep! What’s the old saying? …Image is everything. Common sense prevailed with the though of how will this look to the general public ! …The message got out, awareness of a problem being managed was presented, without the likely risk of negative Public relations in that case.
I know It’s kind of a hassle to have to constantly think ahead all the time about how things look to others, but in all honesty, That’s Life these days! … And it’s not just trapping, it’s everything a person does! (An example) … I have been pulled over by Cops in the past coming home from work after working over time at night, and I know it was just because I drove an old beat up Dodge truck, that was on the road at 1:00 -2:00 am in the morning! When I got a new truck, it never happened again! … The power of Image!

I had an old Dodge Dakota and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt I was pulled over once because he thought I didn’t have insurance. When I rolled the window down I quickly told him I did, I was just an actual poor working man.
