We’re about a month in. How’s everyone’s season going? Have you started yet? We still have almost three months to trap. I haven’t set anything in the dirt yet. Waiting on all the deer seasons to quiet down.
I’ve started.Been land trapping that’s about all I do anymore.Have caught a little bit of everything.Been trying to work around the deer hunters.Things opened up but now blackpowder seasons open.Had to pull a few traps where I knew a boy was gonna hunt.Been having a good time.
Can’t complain I guess I’ve caught some beaver and one cat so far but it seems like I’ve been so busy I’ve not trap heavy yet. Deer season over I can get into it.
Doing alright, just haven’t been able to start heavy yet cause of deer seasons. Drove to Kansas yesterday and got things set up. Today is SET DAY 1! Been waiting a long time. Not expecting much but I’m going to give it all I got for a week anyway.
Those coyotes are smaller, have pointier noses and beady eyes.
Been taking a break for the past week, getting this old man down. I’ve been weighing my beaver and I have a total of 1668lbs. Going to try to start back tomorrow.
That quite a difference than mink snaring.
Well started good been piddling for awhile right at 90 coon know. Almost completely out of otter tags in both zones.
Had planes to take a break from trapping and kill hogs this week but the whole family has caught the crud so I’ve taken a break from trapping and killing hogs.
When if we get better we’re gonna get the hogs killed and I’ll piddle a little more and do some duck hunting and get ready for cats and mink in January and February.
Colt
Been doing fair caught some rats and coon some beaver and a couple of otter waiting on deer season to go out this week on muzzleloader and then hammer down
I have some beaver hides from couple weeks ago in freezer… bout got em done. couple otters.
caught coyote number 2 yesterday. get on some coons this week plus get some traps in the ground.
christmas week will get back on beavers. got 3 places with beavers waiting on me.
Compared to last year I’ve got very little to show
Messed with a few beavers and rats
I’m very concerned about coons I’m not a 100% sure yet but distemper may have hit
I have not had a coon on my cameras in almost 2 months even at corn feeders
Was on the Cincinnati News that across the river it was bad so I don’t know how that spreads
I’ve had the crud too bad head cold that’s had me on the side lines
Got my first set of the season out yesterday and doubled on my first beaver ever, thanks @Kytrapper for the gland lure, it sure worked.
Thank you. I’m glad you had success with it. Just talked to bearwallow and it’s working good for him too. Save some for your cat sets.
Now the fun begins……
I have spotted two more locations for beaver from the road, just working on gaining permission and then switching to dirt sets. We have several cats on camera and some red fox. I feel like I’m going to mark several firsts off the bucket list this season and looking forward to the fur sale.
If you’re not used to or equipped to put beaver up you’re better off just folding flat, longways, and freezing. They’ll buy green beaver at the sale and I bet there won’t be a terrible price difference.
Between dealing with the coughing crud, eye surgery, hearing test to determine if I need hearing aids, and dealing with the needs, and care of an aged parent , as well as a super busy work load, my season has been a flop thus far! However,… getting to spend about an hour visiting with Bearwallow the other evening, and getting to have a few laughs, and hear his stories, and experience the love and excitement that he has for all things trapping, and the outdoors, has restored my desire to fall in and make something from the rest of the season! If you ever get a chance to spend time with him, or his ol’ buddy Buckeye, don’t pass it up; it is like medicine for the spirit of anyone who has a heart for Nature, and an appreciation of Men of character !
Eatwild, that beaver lure of Mr. Pickards that your using is the best there is…HANDS DOWN, 100%! I don’t have any left… you’re lucky, use it wisely my friend. The “unofficial” name of his lure is Mr. Pickard’s Super Secret Formula Beaver Lure Supreme, just so you know.
Did I mention that I didn’t have any???
@Kytrapper that’s a bit of relief, I’m still green as can be with fur processing but I’m using every catch as an opportunity to get more experience. Im fortunate enough to have a mentor that is helping me get started with local knowledge, advice, and if I don’t have something, he does. He let me come get a couple hoops and some supplies to help me put these up. I added these to the freezer with the grey fox I got off the road and some opposum from last season. I’m going to take a day soon to practice fleshing. If things don’t go well on the fleshing beam it’s good to know I can save up some green hides.
@Weez I will be very mindful when and where I use it! I’m very appreciative to start my season off with such a powerful weapon in my lure arsenal.
Hey Weez it’s paid off good for me so far and I named it Pickard Plus lol
Thanks guys. We caught several fisher and marten on it in Maine too, Been making and using for several years.
